Common Notary Mistakes to Avoid

Free Notary Public Training Materials

These are the foundation of basic NOTARY PUBLIC education in Washington. Every Washington notary public should already be familiar with the Washington Department of Licensing notary website, Washington Notary Public Guide, and the NNA Notary Public Code of Professional Responsibility. These are free PDFs available online. I do not own them, but I do refer to them. You must review/study these materials before we meet for hands-on training. Write down your notary questions and bring with you.

WA DOL notary public website

review/study

  • Review WA DOL notary website
  • Watch WA's How to Apply video and How to Perform Notarial Acts
  • Read/print WA Notary Guide
  • Apply to be a Notary

GAUGE YOUR KNOWLEDGE AND COMFORT:
If the WA notary website, notary manual, & videos are sufficient, maybe you don't need NSA 101 and I wish you the best.

However, the State of Washington urges new notaries to seek training anyway. Especially if you don't understand your role as a notary or how to identify signers or how to correctly perform a notarization.

Washington State Notary Public Guide (53 pages)

print/study

Law/rules change over time. Notary fees have changed in WA since the notary guide was published in 2018, for example. Fees for each notarial act are now $15, not $10. (see WAC 308-30  & RCW 42.45)

NSA 101 TRAINING COVERS WET SIGNINGS ONLY. "Wet means with ink pen & paper, face to face with documents and signer physically in front of you. NSA 101 does not cover electronic or Remote Online Notarizations (RON). Learn how to correctly identify signers in person and how to notarize on paper first.

NNA Notary Public Code of Professional Responsibility (97 pages)

print/study

NNA's 10 Notary Public Guiding Principles:

  1. Serve the public honestly, fairly, impartially.
  2. Avoid conflicts of interest.
  3. Ensure the signer is competent and willing.
  4. Verify the identity of the signer.
  5. Perform duties with care and diligence.
  6. Keep records of notarial acts.
  7. Uphold the trust placed in them.
  8. Refuse to perform illegal or suspicious acts.
  9. Maintain confidentiality.
  10. Stay informed on the law.
