Hands-On Training for New Notaries and Signing Agents

Welcome to NSA 101

NSA 101 provides practical, hands-on intro notary public and signing agent training in Olympia, Washington. NSA 101 bridges the gap between any online notary training or rigorous self-study you may have had and your first real notary assignment with real people, real documents. Learn in a friendly, supportive, risk-free environment to help you launch your notary career with confidence. Carmen Lane is your NSA 101 workshop leader. State of Washington does not mandate training but they recommend that you seek it anyway. And that is what I am here for.

Intro Notary Public training is for beginners. This helps brand new notaries understand their duties as an independent notary public in Washington and offers hands-on practice...

  • Identifying the signer,
  • Confirming the signer's competence, willingness, and understanding,
  • Swearing/affirming the signer, and
  • Completing seven notarial certificates

Signing Agent Loan Documents training is more advanced. This is intended for experienced Washington notaries who want to know what it is like to work as an independent notary signing agent performing loan signings. This training helps brand new signing agents understand their limited but critical role and provides hands-on practice preparing for a loan signing appointment and presenting loan documents to the borrowers using a complete sample refinance loan package. You can practice, roleplay, and learn what to say, what to do when you are hired to conduct a loan signing. My approach to training helps eliminate much of the fear and anxiety for brand new signing agents. My NSA 101 loan documents training also helps current loan signing agents who are struggling or making too many mistakes.

Live, in-person training is best if you are new or if you struggle with limits of online training. I have been in your shoes and I know first hand what feels like to watch a video and then click through online notary training modules and minutes later be considered "certified" and yet come away with that horrible anxious feeling of being wildly unprepared, feeling that something is missing. That missing part for me was advice and insight from a working notary signing agent in Washington and some practical hands-on training. Thus, NSA 101 was created with worried notaries like you in mind. Live, in-person training is best, but we can also do training via Zoom.

And for the staunch DIYers and independent learners out there who don't want to meet for training at all, I offer digital download training tools available for purchase if that works best for your learning style.

A message from Carmen at NSA 101:

Hello! Thank you for being here. Being an effective notary requires effort on your part. I can discuss and demonstrate exactly what I do, but I cannot know it it for you. If you are like me and you learn best by doing and being able to ask questions, then my approach to notary training at NSA 101 can help you.

As a commissioned notary public, you alone are responsible for knowing your notary duties and for following and staying current on our state notary laws/rules and industry best practices. So whether or not you decide to take intro notary or loan documents training from me, it is important you get your training from somewhere and to read, study, and practice before jumping into the notary business in Washington.

Follow instructions and get some practical hands-on training and practice with me to help you come away feeling more confident and prepared as a notary public.

WHAT IS A NOTARY PUBLIC?

In Washington state, a notary public is a commissioned official who serves as an impartial witness to the signing of legal documents who verifies the identity of the signers, confirms they are signing knowingly/willingly, and ensures the documents are signed and dated correctly to help safeguard the public by preventing fraud and ensuring documents are properly executed. Notaries must verify the identity of the signer, witness them signing the document, and administer oaths and affirmations. Notaries must also complete a notarial certificate for each act, which includes a description of the act, the date, their signature, title, and official seal. Notaries are appointed by the Washington State Department of Licensing. Washington does not currently mandate notary or signing agent training but they recommend that you seek it anyway -- so that you know how to do your job. And again, that is what I am here for.

The notary public office is a vital public function in Washington. They are called upon to perform many valuable services for the business, legal, and financial communities. Effective notary services help to ensure that documents are properly executed, that facts are duly certified, and above all, that the public is protected from fraud. Notarization is essential for many official documents including mortgages, deeds, contracts, and various corporate transactions and notaries are the front line in fraud prevention.

By following the Washington State Notary Public Guide, RCWs and WACs, and industry best practices, notaries are expected to understand their role and duties and follow the law. Among other things, notaries are prohibited from offering legal or immigration advice or acting as an immigration consultant. A notary public must be at least 18, able to read and write English, and be a resident of or have a place of employment in Washington. A notary public must be ethical and honest and committed to their duties. Notaries must be able to pass a criminal background check, maintain a $10,000 surety bond, complete an oath of office, and keep a bound journal of all notarial acts.
